Chapter 9

Marcus looked around the living room at the pictures of Valerie’s family while she was popping the popcorn. The mantle over the fireplace had a large display of family pictures all down it. There were several pictures of Valerie at different ages. He smiled. Even with braces, she had always been beautiful. He studied the family photo. There was an older couple. They must be her mom and dad, he thought. There was a boy, a little older than Valerie and another girl, who towered over the other two children. He walked down the row studying the pictures as he went.

“Here’s the popcorn,” Valerie brought a large bowl and two glasses of lemonade, on a tray. She sat them down on the table in front of the sofa and turned to see Marcus looking at family pictures.

“That’s my brother and sister,” she said, when she saw who he was looking at. “My brother married a girl from New Zealand and decided to go back there and raise sheep on a farm her father left her when he died. My sister is a lawyer. She is practising in Anchorage, Alaska. She loves it up there but makes it here for a visit about once a year.”

Marcus took her hand a led her to the sofa. “The popcorn smells great,” he said. He sat down and pulled Valerie down beside him.

Valerie took the remote and clicked on the movie. While the previews played, she looked at Marcus seriously. “What’s wrong between you and your mom? You didn’t even know she had a goddaughter.” She looked at Marcus enquiringly.

‘I just don’t know her very well. When I was growing up, she and Dad were never around. I had a nanny and a tutor. They took care of me and provided everything I needed. The only time I saw my parents was when they were having a party. They would bring me out and parade me around on display. I went away to college and I stayed away as much as I could. We had a big disagreement then and I haven’t been back. I haven’t seen either of them in a couple of years. Neither of them told me anything that was going on in their lives. I made a life for myself in Denton. I have been happier there than anywhere else, and I have made some great friends. Now I have you.”

Marcus took her face in his hands and leaned in for a kiss. The kiss soon became more involved as Valerie cooperated fully. She was starved for his kisses. She pulled his shirt out and ran her hands up and down his back. He felt great. Marcus was rubbing his hands over her shoulders and back, while devouring her mouth.

Valerie moaned. She lay back in Marcus’ arms and kissed him back with enthusiasm. The movie played on, forgotten. They had much more important things on their minds, now.

Marcus moved his face to the side to give them breathing room. He didn’t move his arms.
